Origin: Suzhou, China
Birth Year: 1998

Born and raised in Suzhou, China, Yifei Zhu came to the U.S. to pursue an undergraduate degree in Studio Art and Psychology at Carleton College, followed by an MFA in Metalsmithing at Cranbrook Academy of Art. In her practice, she delves into themes centered around family, women, and the evolving roles of women within familial structures. She explores intricate relationships between family members, such as the grandmother-mother-daughter dynamic, and how these relationships are situated within a broader societal context. Through the careful selection of familiar and iconic materials and forms, she extracts the utility from objects while preserving the symbolic and metaphorical meaning charged by our society.
